**Iowa Principal Who Heroically Saved Students in School Shooting Passes Away**
In a tragic turn of events, Dan Marburger, the principal who risked his life to save his pupils during a school shooting in Iowa, has sadly passed away. Marburger, the head of Perry High School near Des Moines, acted selflessly and placed himself in harm’s way when a 17-year-old opened fire at the school.
According to Marburger’s daughter, he tried to distract the gunman before being shot, giving students a chance to flee. Unfortunately, six others at Perry High School were injured, and 11-year-old Ahmir Joliff lost his life in the shooting. Joliff, a sixth-grader, was shot three times.
Marburger, who had been the head of the school since 1995, battled bravely for ten days before succumbing to his injuries. His wife, Elizabeth, shared the heartbreaking news on a GoFundMe page set up for their family. She expressed that while Dan is no longer with them, his family will continue to face the unimaginable in the days, weeks, and years to come.
The heroic actions of Marburger did not go unnoticed. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds praised his selflessness and ordered flags across the state to fly at half-mast until the day of his funeral.
The shooting took place on January 4th in the school cafeteria during breakfast time. Marburger intervened and tried to talk down the suspect, identified as Dylan Butler. His daughter, Clare, wrote on Facebook that it came as no surprise to hear that her father attempted to approach and distract the gunman to allow students to escape. “That’s just dad,” she said.
Butler, a 17-year-old student, was later found dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation discovered that he had a shotgun, a handgun, and a rudimentary explosive device among his belongings.
The incident occurred less than two weeks before the Republican presidential caucuses in Iowa, and President Joe Biden was promptly briefed on the situation. The White House also reached out to the governor’s office to offer support.
The passing of Dan Marburger is a devastating loss for the Perry High School community and the state of Iowa. His heroic actions will forever be remembered, and his sacrifice serves as a powerful reminder of the bravery and dedication of educators..
