Six people, including four members of a family, tragically lost their lives in two separate incidents in Delhi due to the inhalation of toxic fumes from coal braziers. These incidents occurred amid the city’s severe cold conditions, with the minimum temperature dropping to 3.5 degrees Celsius, the lowest of the winter season.

In the first incident, which took place in the Alipur area of outer north Delhi, two children were among the four victims. The deceased have been identified as Rakesh (40), Lalita (38), Piyush (8), and Sunny (7). The room where they were found was locked from the inside, and upon breaking the glass window, the police discovered the unconscious family members. Despite being rushed to the hospital, they were declared dead. A coal brazier was found in the room, leading the police to believe that suffocation was the cause of death.

In a similar incident in the Inderpuri area of west Delhi, two Nepali men were found dead in their room after inhaling toxic fumes from a coal brazier. The victims, identified as Ram Bahadur (57) and Abhishek (22), were locked in their room from the inside. When the door was forced open, the two men were found unconscious and were subsequently pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. A burnt residue from an angithi, another type of coal brazier, was discovered in the room.

The police have initiated further investigation and proceedings under section 174 of the CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure) in both cases.

These tragic incidents serve as a reminder of the dangers posed by coal braziers, especially in enclosed spaces. As Delhi continues to battle cold conditions, it is crucial for individuals to prioritize safety measures when using such heating devices. Adequate ventilation and regular maintenance of these appliances are essential to prevent the build-up of toxic fumes.

The Delhi police have urged residents to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines to avoid similar incidents. In the wake of these unfortunate events, it is crucial for authorities to raise awareness about the potential hazards associated with coal braziers and ensure that necessary safety measures are in place to protect the lives of citizens.

As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of these six individuals and hopes that steps will be taken to prevent such tragic accidents in the future..
