Rex Heuermann to Face Major Announcement in Long Island Serial Killings Case

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. – Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney is set to make a major announcement regarding the investigation into the suspected serial murders of a group of women whose bodies were found near Long Island’s Gilgo Beach.

The prime suspect in some of these killings, Rex Heuermann, is due to appear in court on Tuesday. Heuermann had previously been charged in the deaths of three women and prosecutors have been working to charge him with a fourth slaying.

Heuermann, a 60-year-old architect, was arrested in July and has since pleaded not guilty to the killings of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, whose bodies were discovered buried along a remote beach parkway. He is also considered a suspect in the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, who went missing in 2007.

The arrest of Heuermann came more than a decade after police found 10 sets of human remains hidden in the underbrush near Gilgo Beach while searching for a missing woman. The unsolved deaths have garnered significant public attention, with the case even inspiring the 2020 Netflix film “Lost Girls.”

In 2022, Heuermann became a suspect when detectives linked him to a pickup truck seen by a witness when one of the victims disappeared. The following year, investigators recovered Heuermann’s DNA from a discarded pizza crust in a Manhattan trash can. The DNA matched a hair found on a restraint used in the killings.

Heuermann, who worked as a licensed architect in Manhattan and resided in Massapequa Park, a suburb near where the bodies were discovered, has been held without bail at Suffolk County Jail in Riverhead.

As the investigation into the Long Island serial killings continues, the upcoming announcement from District Attorney Ray Tierney is expected to shed new light on the case and provide further details on the charges against Rex Heuermann.
