Major Announcement Expected in Long Island Serial Murders Investigation
Prosecutors are set to make a significant announcement regarding the investigation into the suspected serial murders of multiple women whose bodies were discovered near Long Island’s Gilgo Beach. The prime suspect in some of these killings, Rex Heuermann, is due to appear in court on Tuesday, facing charges in connection with the deaths of three women. Prosecutors have also indicated that they are working on charging him with a fourth slaying.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney will make the announcement following a court hearing in Riverhead, New York. Heuermann, a 60-year-old architect, was arrested in July and has pleaded not guilty to the killings of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, whose bodies were found buried in a remote beach parkway. He is also suspected in the disappearance and death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes in 2007.
The arrest of Heuermann came more than a decade after the shocking discovery of 10 sets of human remains near Gilgo Beach. The deaths had puzzled investigators for years, drawing significant public attention and even inspiring the Netflix film “Lost Girls” in 2020. While authorities believe that some of the slayings were the work of a serial killer, they do not believe that all the victims were killed by the same person. Many of the cases remain unsolved.
Heuermann first became a suspect in 2022 after detectives connected him to a pickup truck seen by a witness at the time of one victim’s disappearance. The following year, detectives obtained his DNA from a discarded pizza crust and matched it to a hair found on a restraint used in the killings.
Prior to his arrest, Heuermann worked as a licensed architect in Manhattan and resided in Massapequa Park, a suburb near where the bodies were found. He has since been held without bail at Suffolk County Jail in Riverhead.
The upcoming announcement by prosecutors is expected to provide new details and significant developments in this high-profile case. As the investigation continues, authorities are hopeful that it will bring closure to the victims’ families and shed light on the circumstances surrounding these tragic crimes..
