**Monterey County Deputies Identified in Non-Deadly Shooting**

The Monterey County District Attorney has revealed the names of the two deputies involved in a recent non-deadly shooting incident. Identified as Sergeant Jon Luther and Deputy Michael Davis, these experienced law enforcement officers have dedicated 26 and 21 years respectively to serving their community.

The man who was shot by the deputies has been identified as Coleman Smith, aged 33, according to jail records. Smith was apprehended for multiple charges, including burglary, attempting to seize a deputy’s firearm, and causing harm to an elderly individual.

The incident unfolded when deputies responded to a criminal investigation at a residence on Strawberry Canyon Road in Royal Oaks. Upon their arrival, the suspect barricaded himself inside his home, prompting law enforcement to call in the crisis response team for assistance.

After a period of negotiation, the man eventually exited the property. At first, deputies believed it would be a peaceful surrender. However, the situation took a dangerous turn when the suspect attempted to attack the deputies with a weapon resembling a spear, as confirmed by Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto.

Despite deploying non-lethal beanbag rounds, the deputies’ efforts to subdue the suspect proved ineffective. Consequently, both Luther and Davis were forced to use their firearms, resulting in the man sustaining injuries. He was promptly transported to the hospital, where he is currently expected to survive.

In light of the deputies’ use of lethal force, the Monterey County District Attorney has initiated an investigation into the incident to ensure a thorough and impartial assessment of the circumstances.

The release of the deputies’ names aims to promote transparency and accountability in law enforcement operations. By providing this information, the authorities hope to maintain public trust and confidence in their efforts to uphold the safety and wellbeing of the community they serve.

This incident serves as a reminder of the complex and challenging nature of law enforcement work, where split-second decisions can have life-altering consequences. The investigation will determine whether the deputies’ actions were justified within the bounds of the law.

As the case unfolds, the community will be looking towards the Monterey County District Attorney’s office to provide a comprehensive and fair assessment of the incident, fostering trust between law enforcement and the public they protect..
